The Odyssey was pretty good.
I wouldn't say that people not reading the classics is the main cause of our society's corruptitude, though.

no they shouldn't. thats direct violation of the first amendment. not everyone is as openminded as you or me. though breaking the first amendment is something bush and colson(watergate, friend of bush family). terrance you should subscribe to churchand state, actually everyone should.

Isn't forcing us to learn about the five pillars of faith in seventh grade also against the constitution? For that matter, isn't forcing us to read ANYTHING against the constitution?
By the way, the first amendment is the gaurentee of freedom of speech, asymbly, religion, and something else I think. By forcing us to read religious material is not violating the first amendment. A violation would be forcing us to practice what the force us to read.

Also, is the quality of a story defined by old it is? Just because it is a "classic" doesn't mean it is a great book that keeps us from corruption.
By the way, what is TDC?

jeff, use one fukking post, not two. and tdc is an acronym standing for the divine comedy, and teaching about the beleifs of islam was to make us more openminded, they presented in a good way, the divine comedy is so filled religion and insults to those who arn't christian that it would be very offensive, and smae with joan to a degree.and forced reading isn't unconstituitional

I'm very sorry, but I forgot to state something in the previous post. That's why I made another one.
Hey guess what I learned in school! If I don't pray to mecca five times a day, I'll burn in Hell!
Shouldn't you be open-minded to all belief systems, and not only "happy free" ones?

no, some beliefs cant be tollerated cause they dont get along w/ other beliefs and they hurt ppl who arent a part of them, that sort cant be allowed without condoning more violence, which ppl try to avoid, in general

Name one belief that cannot be taken as some sort of threat to someone who is not part of that belief.
Even agnosticism can hurt some people. Hey! What about evolution? That can't be allowed either! Maybe we, in an attempt to not hurt anyone, should just not teach ANYTHING in school! That's a great idea*!
*this is jeff being sarcastic
