Alexei, I don't think they should be. Many thread start, middle, or end as one on one exchanges but others can still read them and enjoy. I've been enjoying the exchange on the topic of wine between Ali and Alex. Would it have made more sense for me to have PM'd that to you? I don't think there's very much left to enjoy on page 4 of the thread.

[this post was written before I saw Nick's post] I disagree. Almost everyone on this forum is friends with everyone else on the forum, and although anyone could come to this forum if they felt like it, they generally don't. This is, effectively, a private forum. In a true public forum, the moderator's purpose is to control the chaos that is anonymous public communication. What is the purpose of a moderator in this forum? I totally agree with the above statement. Just because we arent all anonymous posters, doesnt mean there isnt chaos. In normal social situations, a person who is a dick can be socially outcasted, ignored, or if need be, beaten up. You cant do that online, so that even though we are friends in real life, and all know each other, theres got to be some enforcement to prevent people from just acting like idiots. This is possible because people often have online "personas" that are different from their real life selves. Hence you could be good friends with someone who is a destructive wanker online. Thats the brief reason why we need a moderator. Plus junk takes up space online, so if somebody posts real off topic spam (like you did in one other thread here) its a real nuisance since Ive actually got to filter through the posts to find what I want to read. In real life, its easier for me to block your voice if need be. Those are examples of why we need a moderator. What a moderators exact duties I dont think have ever been defined, and I think its kind of up to the moderator himself and also the community. By not defining them, they arent set in stone. If you want the moderator to not do something like delete posts, or to do something, tell him; or better yet, make a post about it so we can talk about it. But dont blame him for the action, and dont be an asshole about the issue.

A man is responsible for his actions. If someone does something that I object to, I will not pretend that he didn't do it. That said, I don't think I waved my finger at him particularly hard.
I also take issue with your suggestion that I was an asshole about this. From my perspective, I engaged others in a lively debate in an attempt to come to a new understanding. If I was truly assholish, you may slap my ass with much vigor.

Right a man is responsible for his actions.. but if someone does something he doesnt mean to, you dont have to criticize him for it, he didnt mean to do it. You might argue that he locked the thread and it clearly wasnt an accidental lock, but I think its the purpose that was more of an honest mistake.
I actually dont think you were being that assholish about the issue. In fact, thats more the wrong word. If anything Im probably being more of an asshole. What I meant was that I guess I didnt like that you used the issue as an excuse to spam, since in my view spam is always a nuisance. If its post-modern spam, its ok. but the very definition of spam to me is junk.
Oh, and I apologize, as the alcohol begins to settle more and more I am becoming less and less concise and literate

I think we're going in circles. The feeling I'm getting is that Henry accepts my appology and has from page 1 (correct me if I'm wrong and then we can argue), but that he wants to make his beliefs clear. I think the topic has been more or less resolved, but you guys are welcome to keep debating.
