my preffered client was the bittorrent client. And let alexie guide you through port forwarding. essentially your going to have to log into your router (you do know how to do that dont you?) and then go through a bunch of options. having your router manual might help, because navigating routers is known to be more complicated than it should be.

I don't know that much when it comes to routers, unfortunately, but try this: Run cmd and then ipconfig. What's your default gateway?

lol @ alex.. its probably gonna be 192.168.1.1
do as alexie said, and find out what your default gateway is. Type that into the adress bar in your browser. Find your routers username and password (if you havent ever touched it, its probably gonna be admin and admin, or admin and password, if neither of those work check your manual or google your routers default settings)
Once youve gotten access to your router, take a look around without changing anything. try and find the port forward settings page, maybe take screenshots of it and post them to us.

Look for something like this: It might be under "virtual server".

Yeah, I don't know why I didn't link to that. :/ If you manage to find out your router model, PortForward is an excellent resource.

Wow ok, I finally got the right passcode from my dad and took care of all of this! I now have a static IP address and I think I successfully portforwarded bittorrent to have five ports.
I'll talk about details tomorrow or sometime to make sure it doesn't sound like I broke something insidious, but either way, THANK YOU SO MUCH ya'll!!

Anyway, glad I could help in whatever small way I can.

He has much different interests, he doesn't use peer-to-peer networks and such. And now that I've gone through the portforwarding website I think I can try and speak in his terms.
Btw, it's still slow as dirt. BT says my ports are open now but I think I only gained a few kb/s in download speed, if that. Suggestions?
PS: My internet is timing out unnervingly frequently, and it didn't use to. Could that be a symptom of my fucking up or am I just being paranoid?
