It's just a question of thought AZERTY came up with.

When I said two for asia, I meant it in the sense that Asia, being the biggest continent, was to be split into two continents... o well.
However, If a world wide nation was created, It would surprisingly be quite easy to rule over and to keep stable. As long as the citizens were given some goal (such as an attempt to colonize mars, or to extend our border, or if we were to find another alien race...) it would not only become easy to manage, but almost impossible to break up. The kind of government that would rule such a nation would be up to the people, but just about any form of government could work. A Monarchy (as long as their existed strong rulers) or A republic (as long as it was set up by strong and intelligent people).
The point is that if a world wide nation was created, would the effects be good or bad?

In my view, the human race will have to look over their differences and unify. Can we logically continue to exist into the far future with national borders still existing? It would seem odd if future colonies on other planets drew borders so that each country would stay to their turf; even in space. As a species we are biologically the same, hence national borders are often abitrary and sometimes divisive. Would it be a good idea to do it now? I would say no. This is because significant differences like language and culture still drive wedges between a successful unification. Language especially would prevent a smooth government as different regions would take time to translate orders to and from the government. This and other problems that are current in the world could cause the plan to fail, which would eventually turn opinion against unification, further hampering future efforts. If unification is attempted, there first must be a more tolerant population and almost certainly at least one (but not necessarly, only) common language. If not, the government might collapse as regions try to secede or are unable to function effectively between languages. I will now get off the soap box.

I doubt we will survive on this planet for more than a hundred years or so anyway...we are using up all of our resources.

Don't be so pessimistic! ;D If the world can slow its resource comsumption with newer technologies, we might survive. Look at all the advancements of the last century. I'm sure that many new important scientific acheievements will occur in this one as well. Of course there is also the question of population control...

Blue Dolphin, just for your information, Language barriers wouldnt and dont exist. In the ONU or the UE, (apart from the fact that most of those politicians speak 3-5 languages) instantaneous translation is done by speakers fluent in many languages... No it is more a difference in Culture that is preventing such a government from taking place... Also, new advances in Science will not so much cut resource consumption, but will allow us to exploit other resources....

Assuming we ever achieve it, where would be bad in solar power? How could we exploit that?

We would still be exploiting it... its not like their is infinite amounts of it... and for each bit of sunlight our solar panels absorbe, the earth absorbs that much less, therefore making the earth slightly cooler... so too many might counter the effects of global warming! (oh no!) Its still a resource, and can still be exploited.

If we developed the technology right, we would be consuming a fraction of sun light so insignificant it wouldn't matter for about a trillion years...

so.... we could still exploit it... (essentially its the same idea with oil mining... If we could have developed the right technology, we could have refined the oil better, and we could have more efficiently converted it to energy...)

I still think the fact remains, we could never build a solar panal big enough to absorb enough of the sun light to cause a difference of the life of anything...
The flow of sunlight is constant, and I highly doubt that source of power will dry up anytime within the next few billion years...

I know... but as I said before... every bit of sunlight we absorb to convert to energy, is that much heat that our earth loses, so if we create enough solar panels... we might induce another ice age....

but the fact still remains... we can exploit other resources... Therefore we will most certainly live to eventually create a WWN (World Wide Nation)
