Looks good. Painter is a great program, I like it quite a bit more than photoshop. Some constructive criticism: the musculature, esecially around the legs and under the arms is rather wonky. The grip on his sword looks rather loose. The face could also use some work, though I'll chock this up more to the fact it's done digitally. As far as the cloring goes, you seem to know what you're doing with the colors for the skin. However, his hair looks grey as opposed to black (should go from black to around 60% or more depending on how shiny it is). Of course, if you wanted it grey then it's pretty good. Finally, there doesn't seem to be a clearly defined light source. I can tell it's coming from somewhere above him, but that's a very broad description.
I know you said to be gentle, but what can I say, I'm a critic.

Much like Nick, I'm a critic when it comes to art and I try to keep it constructive. I definately found the light source to be bothering me. I think it was because it's coming from above and in front of him due to the torso shading, but the hair allows it to seep under and from both sides which does not work as well for me. I would try to add more textures to the clothing as well as more shading. I think it's a good start and I'd say it's a good start for a first layer or so but I'd want to see more. Granted, I still use photoshop. I have a copy of painter somewhere, but I haven't mucked around enough to learn it at all so I still use photoshop religiously. I think it has something to do with coloring with a touch-pad... ~*~Me

Hey, Nick: is it possible to use Draw like Painter? Painter like Draw?

Ugh, a mouse? No wonder. I've heard of maybe one person who does good drawings with a mouse. Nice to have another artist on board though, maybe you can inspire me to put more stuff up.
And what's Draw Alexie? Haven't heard of it before.

OH! CorelDRAW. I have heard of it, but I've never had much interest in vector art. I'm too messy to really be able to do much in it. It won't work like painter though, vector programs work off mathematical equations representing shapes, lines, and fills instead of on a pixel by pixel basis. They're ideal for a cell-shaded look, but complex gradation or texture is gonna be either impossible or will make for a rather large file. You also have to convert it to a bitmap image if you want to view is pretty much anywhere outside of the program.

its also great for creating images that scale well, as well as creating images that arent memory hogs. Its true that its harder to draw in though. Is CorelDraw better than illustrator?

No clue as to the quality of CorelDRAW, I've barely touched Illustrator, even though I have it. Few people use vectors for much anymore, since filespace is rarely an issue. I'd imagine Flash is probably the most widely used program these days out of all of them.

From what I've heard, Draw and Illustrator are pretty much equivalent save for a few select features. It really depends on what you're doing, though most artists seem to prefer Draw.
RE: filespace, I think most people use vectors because you can resize them ad infinitum without losing quality, not because they take up less space than rasters.

Yeah, I actually know what vectors are -- I just didn't realize that Painter was a raster program. (In fact, I'd never even heard of Painter before this thread!)
Thanks for the info!

Painter isn't so well known, but it's a great program. It's more tailored to representing natural media (like real paint), which makes it easy to get great textures. You can even use a clone brush that paints like a Van Gogh painting. I took a class where we used it a lot, but back then I stillwas in my High-School suckitude period.
