goth is incredibly different from heavy metal, and death metal to me is only really similar to heavy metal and even then the stuff typically in the lyrics is completely different
if you're going to be foolish and lump things together just because you don't like them, at least title it "music i dislike" or something stupid like that
to me anyways, cult following = small and extremely zealous group that likes whatever it is, which doesn't really make sense to me for any of them, including yatta, though i can sort of vaguely see what you meant

I lumped them together because they are all equally ridiculous.

that categorization isn't very logical to anyone who doesn't share your beliefs (not that I like heavy death metal whatever)
I realize of course, that this post is meaningless beyond the forum as is most stuff here, but still...

Come on, you cant really say that death and heavy metal arent similar. And I was using goth more as an adjective, because when you wear that much black, you have to be goth.

heavy metal involves the capacity for melody, is often more "mainstream" and is very general catagory that often includes many subcatagories and metal bands that popped up before the catagorization became an issue, like Black Sabbath or such. In fact, the name comes from Steppenwolfs' song "Born To Be Wild"where part of the lyrics go "heavy-metal thunder"
Death metal is characterized by the pounding drums, deafening guitar and bass and the screaming/growling vocals. Often, this style is mixed with black metal (which is yet another metal genre). Even death metal has subcatagories, such has hardcore deathmetal, rapcore deathmetal and so on. Death metal came from speed/thrash metal which, in turn, came from heavy metal.
Goth music isn't something I can really describe, because I don't know much about it, except that not all Goths wear black. Heck, there is even a catagory of Goths that wear red and white almost exclusively.
Yes, I do admit that they are all rock styles, have similiar roots and may share fanbases, but they're as different. Trust us.

I never argued that Death metal and heavy metal are the same, I only meant that they are similar genres that are to an extent equally ridiculous (a personal opinion based partly on the way many musicians in the genre dress and the music itself).
If you want to, JP, you can categorize every single song into its own subgenre of music and maintain that each song is completely different to every other song. While that may be true, it would be stupid, since it prevents categorizations (a useful ability that allow us to find other similar music). Therefore I will maintain that I dont think I am wrong in saying that heavy metal and death metal share many similar themes. However you are right, Heavy metal might be a little more normal and worth listening to than death metal. I still think it would be stupid though to maintain that they are completely different.
I didnt even know goth music existed.

But Ali has maintained that its merely his opinion and that has admitted that he is uneducated in the subject. Based on that, I can't really disagree with him. He has no interest in any of the genres, and its natural for him to just use prejudice to lump them together. Hell, I lump them together and I listen to a lot of the stuff.

I didnt even know goth music existed. From what I've heard of it, its slow and depressing. The reverb is cranked up alot for most bands. Goth music is different from Industrial bands like Marylon Manson or Nine Inch Nails. Though the members in those bands can be called Goths, I guess, they don't play Goth music genre. Instead, they scream obsceneties and scare the crap out of people's parents and grandparents. Oh, and their pets, too. Wow... this thread is the first time in months where my ranks in knowledge (rock musc) comes in handy... Thank goodness for the synergy bonuses from perform (know-it-all). P.S. manson sucks

actually NIN doesn't exactly scream obscenities. . . or scream at all. . . . . . not anymore anyways, but i don't remember any old songs in which they screamed either
goth isn't always slow or depressing. . . . some is just weird, like i said check out She Wants Revenge - Tear You Apart
