Starcraft fans rejoice! The sequel has been officially announced by Blizzard today. I still remember getting that game in elementary school. I haven't played it for years though. Official SiteStarcraft 2 Wikipedia Article

That looks really cool. I was expecting it to kind of suck, for some reason.

JP doesn't like Starcraft. I haven't been this excited for a game since Half-Life 2 Max Payne! (and it was awesome!) ;D ;D ;D Guess I'd better beat SC1+BW before spoilers start coming out. I've been stuck on SC1-P9 for the past few weeks.

Looks like Starcraft 1 with better graphics. I'm unimpressed.

Looks like Starcraft 1 with better graphics. I'm unimpressed. Well, what were you expecting? There will be plenty of new additions.

Im kind of of the same mind as Nick to tell the truth. It looks like it could just be a warcraft III mod. Anyway, we will see how it turns out when its released.

That could characterize pretty much every sequel made. It should look about the same since they are in the same universe. Also they can't really change the style of play from RTS.

I think Jeff is right. Most Starcraft fans love the game because of its three distinct races and story, so Blizzard can't really change those.
Why are you guys (read: Nick and Ali) underwhelmed? What were you expecting?

I was expecting something besides a graphics upgrade. I'm sure it'll get Warcraft 3's hero system, but they didn't even add a new race. From what I can tell, it's the same old system. I was never really that keen on the old starcraft, but this just doesn't have any new and impressive aspects to even draw a glance. If it's been this long since the original was released, I want to see them do something new, not just give me the same old gift in shiny new wrapping paper. It's like getting a new King of Fighters game, it's almost identical to the last but with a few extra fighters.

You still haven't mentioned exactly what you want, save for a new race. (Which would, as I mentioned, be incompatible with the SC storyline.)
New units? They're there. Game improvements? How about the new physics engine?
I just don't see how it's possible to make the classic action-RTS formula "better".

Well, there are the destructable environments that have been added to pretty much every modern RTS by now. I'm also tired of games that rely simply on resource rushing more than real strategy. Something like Myth or even Dawn of War where the environment provides cover would be nice too. All the environment currently does is limit the movement of certain units to a minimal level. From what I can tell, it still doesn't play much like a real modern RTS, it's just Warcraft with guns and aliens.
BTW, the physics in this case don't seem to improve the game at all. They just look schnazzy like in Doom and have no bearing on the gameplay.

Fair enough, but destructible environments have always seemed gimmicky to me. I've never played an RTS in which they made that much of a difference.
Formations would certainly be nice, though -- the AI in Starcraft is pretty horrible, and getting my units to attack without getting their asses kicked is only slightly easier than training chaos to write poetry.
(Oh, and SC did use the environment to alter unit stats, but not many people know this.)

They're selling something a bit larger than an expansion with a graphics "upgrade" like ten years later.
"lol, we're giving each race a few new units" isn't a new game, its an expansion. For crying out loud they're even recycling like half of the characters.
The graphics look like ass. That might've flown a few years ago but for crying out loud it looks like a vaguely sharpened version of the original starcraft, how long has it been?
As far as gameplay goes, I don't trust blizzard to do anything beyond either copy themselves or others. New abilities doesn't equate to good gameplay. It'll likely just be warcraft III with different graphics.
Thanks, but I'll keep Dawn of War.

Destructible environments were used in games like Company of Heroes to provide cover for infantry. It has to be done well though, otherwise, it is, like what Alexei said, very gimmicky.
I feel starcraft was always a fast paced RTS that used only the minimum of rules. Units always follow orders, there is no supply issues, no morale. Land is either traversible or it isn't. This may not be a good thing if one wants a more complicated and "realistic" experience.
Graphicswise, the game doesn't look too bad for the time. It has been 10 years since the last version, but they can still only build up to where graphics are today. It looks a lot like C&C 3's graphics (not that I'm saying it is good, but just not surpising).

WTF? It would have been ridiculously stupid for them to recreate everything from scratch. Of course some of the units will be the same -- they characterize the freaking races, if not the game itself! Warcraft 3 did the same thing.
Besides, "a few new units" can radically alter the original game experience.
If everything looked vastly different from the original, I would have been very disappointed.
Are you kidding me? The graphics look exceptional! Have you even seen the hi-res trailers?
That's like saying Starcraft was like "Warcraft 2 with different graphics". They're just not the same thing. Blizzard always makes great games.
No, I think this is exactly what Starcraft fans want.
