Uhm yah, Nintendo failed marketing 101 with that. Hope it does well, but the name alone is going to deter so many mature players

Uhm yah, Nintendo failed marketing 101 with that. Hope it does well, but the name alone is going to deter so many mature players I disagree, I think it was a good move, they got a lot of non-negative plubicity when they announced the name because it was so off the wall, and it fits the overall idea of the system since the whole remote thing is also gonna feel strange and new to most people. I think for most people, all the name means is a little chuckle, seriously doubt it'll stop anyone from buying the thing.

Um... Yea. Mature means that you do not factor in such silly things when deciding what console to buy. The Wii is not a marketing flop but rather pure marketing genious. Such a name will not negatively affect sales because it doesn't mean anything dirty. However, it got a lot of free advertising all over the internet

When I say mature I mean its denotation not is commonmost connotation. ie older, not more enlightened or rational, dumbass.
I havn't been involved in internet/tech/gaming culture much, so I havn't seen any popular support or positive advertising. The reactions I have seen are people snickering and and moving on, as if they dont' feel its interesting enough/mature enough for their time. and I like that its an off-the-wall name, but it conjures in me alot of primary school associations, and I personally see nintendos image as a younger console as its biggest weakness.

I do agree with Alex, the problem with the name is that it appeals more to younger gamers. Of course thats a common theme with nintendo, and nintendo still comes out with good games that appeal to mature clientele on occasion, but in general nintendo seems to target a younger audience, leaving older people to be targeted by sonys marketing campaign.
The Wii name had advantages and disadvantages, and while it was a creative and risky name pick, I would not say it was "marketing genius". It did market the console well when the name was revealed because of shock factor, but that same shock also made it the but of jokes and as mentioned above, made the console less appealing to older players. By now, a lot of the shock has gone away and it has worn itself into a more comfortable name for most people but it still holds a stigma for some.

I'll say it again, if a name causes older people to not use a certain product when its not because the name is offensive, I guess people get more stupid as they get older.
Would you refuse to eat something that tasted good because the name sounds funny?
As far as reactions that I've seen so far, the only things I've seen regarding the wii are either positive reactions or confused ones (they don't know what to make of it one way or another), whereas with the xbox 360, I've seen little besides fanboy-ism, and for the PS3 I've seen fanboy-ism and negative mostly.
Concerning overall image, yes, nintendo does generally seem to hit the younger crowd which is why the name might have a minor effect (though I'd still say people aren't gonna just decide not to buy it solely because of that), however, at the same time, I feel like their games tend to have some degree of appeal to people of all ages, especially for those of us who grew up with Mario and company. Sony is definitely banking on older gamers though overall in my opinion, on the other hand, now that I think about it, I can't recall any first party games for any sony platform.

The people who snicker about the Wii and say they won't buy one are just lying because they have issues and are too embarrased to admit that they will buy one.
Nintendo does not only marked towards little kids, it markets towards gamers who are tiered of the standard fighter/shooter clones that plague the mature systems like xbox or sony platforms. Hence things like the DS touchpad and the Wii controller.
As for the name, I think it is very original as far as consoles go. Mostly a console name will just describe its function (Nintendo Entertainment System, Play Station) or its shape (Xbox). Sega consoles had cool names, and now Nintendo is doing something creative. I seriously think the name will help them more than hurt them.
