Interesting study. I definitely think that a major part of the appeal of video games stems from their "capacity to engender feelings of autonomy, competence and relatedness".
I can't sword fight in real life, but with Soul Caliber all I need to do is push buttons. Even though I am only average at that game, the skill my character has far surpasses anything I could realistically achieve in real life. That's cheap competence for ya.
