Personally I think that one of the most important pieces of symbolism in the matrix reflects the idea that those with sloppy spelling lead sloppy lives. Yes Im sure it was one of the great themes during the whole movie. I mean, for example, when Neo is fighting with Agent Smith in the Subway, that has make less spelling errors written all over it. And furthermore, he has a point there, and I think that we could all make use of spelling more carefully...

Personally, I don't like the Matrix. I think their "philosophy" is just a lame attempt to make a stupid action movie look smart.

It is a bit of a stereotypical plot. I've avoided two thirds of the trilogy when I heard out they had less plot and more action.

argh...its just the movie..if you read the script, all it is is philosophy, and its the american culture to blame, they cant see a movie with no action! are you kidding me! its like watching a comedy without fat fucks farting!

Yes, blame the American culture!!! Action movies have been so damn fast paced to overcome the desensitization(if it wasn't a word before, it is now) that all of us have had drilled into our skulls. It defeats any possible plot that is not a complete abstract interpretation by the viewer, which is rarely attempted anyways because we Americans like to have others do our thinking for us since we'd all rather spend our time watching more action brimming movies, perverted comedies and news reports blaming politicians that don't do much anyways.

A lot of the philosophy that IS in the Matrix (the original) is based off of Jewish mysticism or Kabbalah. NO this is not the same Kabbalah Madonna practices (even though she thinks it is, what she practices is a cult but that's another story nevermind, anyway). A lot of the central ideas of the Kabbalah (from what I can remember) is that when you open your mind to mysticism, you begin seeing the world as it truly is. Life as we know it is not quite an illusion, but not quite the "truth". Through Kabbalah, a mystic is supposed to see the "true" form of everything or the light of god everywhere or something to the degree. I may be fudging the lines a bit, but it is definately something like that. This has obvious relations to the Matrix because, well, the central idea is that the world we currently live in is a mere illusion and only by "opening your mind" or taking the pill can you see the world as it truly is.
The rest was taken from the popular anime movie "Ghost in the Shell".

I thought the whole pill thing was acid the first time I saw the Matrix and thought the rest of the movie was just Neo tripping out ><;; And I'm not at all surprised that parts were stolen from anime. I guess they tried to contribute to the society from which they stole from with Animatrix... or I'm just making up my own theories which is fun!

Although I watched "Ghost in the Shell" once and don't remember it being very much like The Matrix, but then again, that was a while ago so maybe I'd catch the resemblance with another watching. But I did read in Wired as a documented fact that it was based on "Ghost in the Shell" so we'll see.

I need to watch "Ghost in a Shell" sometime, I'm really behind in my anime. Being a sporadic in my anime watching, the whole anime community has gotten far ahead of me ><

This is a bit late but that never hurt anyone (besides the late person, that is). I personally think that the first movie was something more than just an action movie. It seemed much more thought out than most similar movies, like the directors had been thinking it up and fleshing it out for quite some time. I think the second movies were created to please the crowd and, especially, to try and milk more money out of the fans of the first movie. Admittedly, the whole series was a rather common story of man vs. machine, but I think the first movie did a very good job of retelling it.
As for Ghost in the Shell, they're comming out with a sequel (whether it will be a Final Fantasy style sequel or a propper sequel I'm not sure.)

Actually, lateness has hurt people. There was a translator in Washington, D.C. that could have alerted the Navy in Pearl Harbor that they were going to be attacked, but he took his sweet time doing it.
