I'm not sure what people will think about this topic, or if anything like it has been posted before.
Why is our culture(and many other cultures) obsessed with beauty? Why do people care so much about how they look?
I have always been curious about this topic. What exactly makes someone beautiful? If you hate yourself, can you still be beautiful? Where does outer beauty/inner beauty combine?
How are beauty and love similar...or are they..?
Hmm..

WARNING: OPINIONS AHEAD FEEL FREE TO DISAGREE NOT A THESIS PAPER - STATEMENTS MIGHT HAVE HOLES SOME MATERIAL FORMULATED FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF MAKING ME LOOK SMARTER ;D Why is our culture(and many other cultures) obsessed with beauty? Why do people care so much about how they look? Hmm...I suppose you could say it is because beauty breeds sexual desire (which is good for reproduction), but that's probably not the entire case. America's focus on this topic stems from the media's deafening augmentation of said case. They do say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I suppose there isn't really a set definition. Some cultures (like ours) tend to focus on muscular build and, erm, female body parts, while others (like Italy) treasure plumpness. As for hating oneself and remaining beautiful, it really depends on where one is. There is no universal standard of beauty, so one might actually be both beautiful and ugly under different circumstances! Nobody can determine beauty - not even the person in question. Inner beauty vs. physical beauty? I suppose the latter is more of a first impression phenomenon and the former a descriptor of personality. I can't say for certain (the thought is quite new to me), but it seems that the perception of physical beauty actually changes as one gets to know a person better, thus melding both his or her beauties into one. If my forementioned theorom stands, then, in love, inner beauty simply becomes physical beauty, rendering any initially alarming defects irrelevant. Love for physical beauty is love for sex. Agreed! ;D

To put it bluntly, I agree with Alexie. I especially agree with his views on Inner Beauty vs. Out Beauty.
