Why or why not?

I dunno. Sometimes people are taken in by a first sight. I think Samuel Clemens (or Mark Twain for those who don' t know) had this happen with him and his wife, but I am not too sure.
Then again, often merely seeing someone is not enough to start a lasting relationship.

It is possible that you could meet someone and immediately form a mental/psychic bond; however, you would be able to differentiate it from typical physical attraction, which is what happens most of the time. It is also common that this "love at first sight" is brought on by empathy:
"Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me. And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can?" -Echoes, Pink Floyd
Empathetic love is still love, however, and often times remains pure.

I agree with that, I have to really get to know someone before I love them. But you don't have to know a thing about them to like them, or consider them a friend.

Lust at first sight.
Not love.
Back in my day, love was supposed to be a mutual thing - a two way street. Not a one-sided obsession.

I back Henry on that one. Love is gradual, and you come to realize only after many years. Only lust comes at first sight.

Well, henry has already said it for me. But I believe in lust at first sight. I do not believe in like at first sight. For that like would be based on looks and then it's probably lust, not like.
"Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk by you again?"
