E. Autumn is a really great artist. Her music is so much fun to listen to, and it is like nothing I have ever heard before. I have not liked someone this much for a long time. Thanks for giving me her CD Steph!!
Here is her site for anyone that is interested:http://www.emilieautumn.com/eaonline.html
Not only is her music great, but her lyrics are also very very beautiful. For instance:
"You're in my stars you know Don't need no crystal ball to tell me so Whispering in the air Hoping that my words find you somewhere Even when I close my eyes I'll never recreate the Time that flies The consequence is hanging there The sky will fall but I don't care
CHORUS Meet me beneath my balcony and say No one but you could ever fill my night Be the sunlight in my every day Underneath my balcony I'll say No one but you could ever fill my night Be the sunlight in my every day
Your love is haunting me And all I want is more to set me free Whispering in the air Hoping that my words find you somewhere Do you hear me call your name I know we will never be the same The consequence is hanging there The sky will fall but I don't care"
I really like the allegory too.

She is a very, very interesting artist. She makes her own costumes, writes her own music and yet balances it out with samplings from classical pieces such as greensleeves (and I believe Cannon in D appears in one), and is a real classically trained violinist. She sticks to no genre some of her songs are pop (although pop of the highest quality as in Poe or some of the oldies pop groups), others border on electronica, some are lyrical rock, some can only be considered jazz. Juliet is addictive, Ever is beautiful, Rapunzel is elegant, Castle Down is heartwrenching... she has started with a great repetoire that I think shows her to have great potential.
My favorite song by her at the moment is unrelased but can be downloaded as a live video clip (she performs it at lives). It's called "Shallot" and it will be coming out on her next album Opheliac. I'm slightly biased because I love Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shallot", but her interpretation of it is lovely and it fits in beautifully with the theme of the new albumn (The concept of an Opheliac is taken, of course, from the character in Shakespeare's "Hamlet". It is someone who thrives on being controlled and devistated by the person that they love). Apparently the album track has amazing cello on it which I can't wait to hear!
Another aspect of EA that I find fascinating (although I am a fan of hers for the music) is the way she's able to get the word out about her music as an independant artist. The majority of radio stations will not play music released by independat record compies. The only way to get your music on the radio is if you're promoted by Arista or some other huge name. Emilie, who started her own record company, has managed to use the internet to her advantage. She offers all tracks from her first full album, Enchant, for free online and encourages downloading of them. Why would she do such a thing? Because her songs won't be played on the radio. By offering them for download, she essentially gets free advertising. And, believe it or not, people DO go out and buy the album anyway. Some of it may be out of a stronger need to because this is an independant artist who has a harder time making money, or some people just generally buy CDs of artists they like. Anyway, as far as I can tell it's been quite lucrative for her. In addition, she's offered unedited studio recordings of two jazz songs for her side project known as "The Jane Brooks Project". Amongst her journal entries on her forum and the botique site that she runs with her friend (her mother was a seamstress and so she's great and sewing as well as singing) she often hides mp3s of new songs. She also interacts with her fans more than any artist I've ever seen. She has a livejournal and a fan forum where she posts regularly. She responds to the concerns of her fans. This = lasting fans. While someone from a major record lable can win more fans quickly, through her constant communication EA can keep fans longer through a force of character. It's an awesome way of getting the word about yourself out as an independant artist, and I respect her greatly for figuring out how to make her own way in the world (if you sign with a major lable they tend to change your music/image to make it more marketable to the masses which may not be what you want) and not become a starving artist.
