ok this thread is an attempt for me to expand my musical taste. Here you are to put good music. This doesnt mean music that you like, because then you would get music that others dont like. Instead Here you put down bands or specific pieces which just wow you... The bands and pieces you should put here ought to be ones that even people who hate the genre of music that it belongs to would like. The best kind of band to put down as a result, is one from a genre you usually dont like all to much, with the exception of this one song. Therefore I will start by putting Bueno Vista Social Club. This is latin Jazz that is awesome. Try Chan Chan and others The first 3 in the list are the only "good ones" the others are ok.. but not good enough for this list.

the guidelines in this thread seem to prohibit a lot of the best music, and lend to the submission of a great deal of accessible, tame work.
I will say, however, that everyone should listen to the following albums:
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire (very slow) My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything The Smiths - The Smiths The Cure - Disintegration Joy Division - Substance (a compilation album, but oh well) The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico (a little ugly at times) Sigur Ros - ( ) (this is a wierd one) John Coltrane - Giant Steps (jazz) Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (jazz) Miles Davis - Bitch's Brew (wierd jazz)

Brave Saint Saturn. Their stuff isn't too polished, but the lead singer has a really nice voice. Yes, they are a rock band, but they only have one song that could be anywhere close to being the heavy metal music. And that one is only similar in the pattern of chorus and verse that it uses. For the most part, they have nice and soft, if depressing, music.

henry.. it was simply used as a discouragement for those who have a hard time distinguishing between personal taste and good music (though no matter what, there will always be a bit of personal taste discrimination). However, as was to be expected, Bezzerker and Andrew didnt listen, so it hardly matters.
Look guys, no matter how good the bands are, not all of there pieces could be good. As a result, I would like it if you did as Henry did, and listed specific good songs (or maybe albums). Hopefully their best.

What are your usual music tastes? Let's see if we can work with those. Giving us just one example of latin jazz really doesn't do too much to give us an idea.

the whole point is that regardless of music tastes I should hopefully like, or at least appreciate the song. Personally I like Classical music the best. Of which I greatly enjoy Mussorgsky, Dvork (Pronounced Dvorjak), Rachmaninnof and a couple other pieces. Otherwise I like some of the beatles, and thats about it as far as general genres go. Personally I dont really like Latin Jazz... excepting those few pieces which are so good that I cant help but like them.

Ali...You do realize that what one person considers a really great song can be considered total garbage by someone else. With the guidelines you set it's very difficult to suggest any kind of music for you because we have no way of knowing what you will think of it. There is no best music, it's all a matter of personal preference.

similar to my point: music that will be liked by most is never very good work, as what makes something beautiful to one person it makes it utter shite to someone else.
case(s) in point: tool, sigur ros, arvo part.

personally I disagree... and that where one person may not like the piece as much as another person might, that there are some pieces that are universally good, and that even though not everyone may enjoy them, they are at least acknowledged by even this group to be supurb.
essentially I, know which songs I like, but I was attempting to discover the songs I didnt know I liked.

yes; i don't deny that songs exist which are enjoyed by a large and diverse group of people. however, it seems to me that such songs or artists tend to be considered mediocre by nearly all in said group. that is to say, nobody's favorite music is considered superb by a very large audience.
except among musically shallow people. they all thrive on the same trite crap.

the only reason why that "generally good" pool is only considered mediocre, is because they usually belong to a genre of music that many dont consider there favorite. As a result, they prefer the ones from the generally good pool that fall within the category of music they most prefer.
The rest of the people, are so into one type of music though, that they prefer the experimental pieces over the masterpieces, or the sentimentally appealling pieces over the good pieces. Which isnt to say those pieces arent good either, just they arent as good as the others.
