CORRECTION: what I meant by this question is, when do you understand the actual WORDS of the lyrics? Please discuss song meanings in the "song meanings" post.

When I listen to russian bards, the meaning of the poetry somehow evades me the first time, but then I start to understand it for real. It's the same for me with music, too. I listen to a piece the first time, and I just get an "impression" of it. Afterwards, though, I really start to focus on the details.

?
I don't think you understood me. What I meant by "meaning" is the meaning of the words, not the meaning of the song as a whole.

Ah, pardon.
Anyways, I myself usually have to look at the lyrics.

Yeah, me too. It's easier that way, and you can enjoy the lyrics better than if you're constantly trying to make the words out.

It kinda depends on the song.
Some songs have very accessable, straightforward lyrics, whereas others are more complex and require a more thoughtful analyzation.
