This is a great song by Pink Floyd, and very emotional. Realize that the author, Roger Waters, lost his father in the war, and this is a biography. I'm not sure if he's the one who sings it, but it's still very heartfelt. When the forward commander Was told to sit tight When he asked that his men be withdrawn. And the Generals gave thanks As the other ranks held back The enemy tanks for a while. And the Anzio bridgehead Was held for the price Of a few hundred ordinary lives. And old King George Sent Mother a note When he heard that father was gone. It was, I recall, In the form of a scroll, With gold leaf and all. And I found it one day In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away. And my eyes still grow damp to remember His Majesty signed With his own rubber stamp. It was dark all around. There was frost in the ground When the tigers broke free. And no one survived From the Royal Fusiliers Company C. They were all left behind, Most of them dead, The rest of them dying. And that's how the High Command Took my daddy from me."

Didn't do much for me...
Not that I'm a horrible, cold-hearted person - but I think they've done much more powerful music.

I know, but I'm just saying that you have to understand what this guy's feeling when he sings it - he says he is still very emotional about the topic, even now (he's what, 60, 70?). I never said this is his best song.

I forget the exact history, but Roger Waters dad was in a major battle for a bridge in WWII and lost his life, when the tigers broke free is referencing to when the Panzer tanks broke the American defences holding the bridge and pretty much killed everyone, including Roger Waters dad.

Yes, I think I've heard that account somewhere on a lyrics site...
