Just thought I'd post this for the hell of it. I ordered two japanese format games and I finally got home to play them. I bought a solderless Mod chip (which makes it so the infor isn't cleared whem you eject a cd/dvd) and swap magic version 3.3, which allows a PS2 to play games from a different region or even, heaven for bid, games burned off the internet. Unfortunately, version 3.3 has issues, and hates most games and won't work. There's an extra prgram, but it only really works with version 2. Basically, I have to spend another $30 to get the newer version of swap magic which reportedly works with most import games without any extra confusion.
My point? Modding a PS2 to play import games is HARD. just buy yourself a mod chip that requires soldering or even an import PS2, and save yourself a headache.

aye... I remember when I tried to mod my PS1 it wasnt easy either. First i had to buy a mod chip, then get someone to install it, then keep some part of the ps propped open with a paperclip.

Ok, I asked on another forum, and I might not be using it right. As it turns out, I may have to pry the cd tray back out to switch the various CDs. There are several alternatives to a no-solder mod chip that basically do this anyway, so it makes me wonder what the point of a mod chip is. I should have just bought a slide card...

or a japanese playstation. And paid a difference of $180+S&H Anyway, I got it to work. To actually use the mod chip, I just had to holddown the eject button. It didn't come with instructions. Anyway, been playing the Berserk video game and it rocks. cutting zombies and trolls into little pieces is very fun. Also been playing Drakengard 2, which is coincedently now out in English. Fun, but being able to understand the language would be very helpful. I may be doing some more importing in the future. ;D

See, I have two comments on this: 1. I have no need to buy imported games, I don't play many video games, so I'm far from exhausting all the options out there for gaming, and thats just console. Even if I did, I would only go through all the work if there were a game I REALLYHAD TO HAVE, lacking a berserk obsession, I'm good. 2. Why don't major console companies make it easier to convert games? It would be more sensible business wise. HOnestly, I don't see any reason they should differ beyond language besides, it couldn't be to costly, and considering the number of people who pay attention to the market, it should easily pay for itself

personally, I'm a big believer of
if a game is good, it'll make it to America. so I really don't worry about it.....

Haha, you wouldnt believe how false that is. There's a huge Berserk following in the US, but it never made it. Also, cultural differences interfere with that statement. I game that someone in the US thinks is awesome, like most FPS's, can fail in asia.

Pardon my previous mangled reply, I was sleepy. That 'I' should be and 'A' at the start of the second sentence.
Anyways, I bet none of you have heard of Rumble Fish. It's a fighting game that looks pretty awesome, I think I might import it.
